THE STORY THAT NEVER WAS.

Here, you’ll find the story that never was. A story written, planned, days and days of work put into it, passion and excitement to finally, put as much effort into something of our own instead of only partner projects, and--

It failed, never to see the light of day. It was a midnight spark that took hold, and nestled its way into my head and wouldn’t let go, and in one sleepless night of creative fervor, I wrote, planned, and...

Well.

It seemed like it wasn’t meant to be. Passion and hard work doesn’t always succeed. The planning, the designs, the storyline, meant to dynamically change depending on votes--

We’d commissioned artwork. Character designs. A little comic series, even, in simple black and white with minimal backgrounds so it could be done quickly as the votes rolled in.

But what we’d commissioned never came in. Deadlines weren’t met, deliverables didn’t show up, and launch day came.

We were, at least, nervous about the progress that was being made, and had our backups ready, of which you see up top. In theory, it doesn’t affect sales, or how the voting goes, or how the flavor can be made, it just...

It just hurts a little. The first thing in a long, long time where we’re putting full creative efforts just for ourselves, to try and believe that our own work can, and should get the same effort that we put into others, and... this is what happened.

It hurts, yes. And it’s something we couldn’t have done anything about.

But is it going to stop us from trying again in the future?

Kid yourself.

It’s another little scar. Another mark, another little memory that we’ll carry into the future, and look at it later when it’s healed and laugh when telling the story of this, and be another reminder of the experiences, good and bad, that make us... well, us.

The time for this, I think, has come and gone. But we’ll try again later, with something else. Maybe we’ll fail on that one too, earn another scar and story, and try again, and again, and again, learning lessons and growing and improving until we’ll succeed.

After all, perhaps the story of the fighters, nicknamed ‘Beef Pho’ and ‘Bo Kho’ won’t be told, but this story has come in its place, hasn’t it?

Below, you’ll find, at least, some of what we did. Concept art, some character descriptions, and the like. Not the full story, because, well... maybe someday down the future, we’ll revisit it for fun. At least, I’d like to think so.

a caged bird

Bo Kho

Nicknamed 'Bo Kho,' as she was found fighting over the dish as an orphan on the streets. She's boisterous, loud, with a quick wit and equally sharp tongue that gets her into constant trouble. She’s dragged ‘Beef Pho’ into fights besides her more than once when people make fun of their nicknames for each other, liking action first, questions later. Before she left in a heated argument, she attended Beef Pho's family's martial arts school after being taken under their wing. She's learned a great deal from them, and is grateful for their hospitality and upbringing, but finds the rules and traditions they use outdated and restrictive. Despite the grounded, adaptable style Beef Pho’s family is known for, she wants to enjoys a flashier, more acrobatic, and less... respectful way of combat that she’s incorporated into her own style, something she’s been constantly scolded for. Yet, when she suppresses that sharp tongue and flashy style she’s told off for, she quickly becomes hidden, invisible, forgotten by those she loves and everyone around her.

For the first time in a year, she and Beef Pho see each other again-- facing off again in the final round of the most prestigious martial arts tournament in the region, determined to prove her ways are right.

Side With Her

a stone trapped beneath the waves

Beef Pho

A kind, yet adaptable fighter, ‘Beef Pho’ was nicknamed as such by ‘Bo Kho’ from his devoted love for the dish, a nickname that quickly got adopted even by other friends and family after it was noted that he seemed to eat at LEAST a bowl a day. He firmly believes in his family’s teachings to help others, reaching out a hand of kindness and giving everyone a chance, including a once belligerent street urchin found fighting over a bowl of Bo Kho. He feels great pressure from his family to uphold the family lineage and reputation, and sometimes, he feels like no matter how hard he trains, no matter how great his accomplishments, he’ll never live up to the invisible expectations everyone has of him. Yet, the tenets of kindness, compassion, and reason in the face of adversity is something he personally upholds, with or without his family’s tenets.

He fights for his beliefs, his family, and for ‘Bo Kho’ to return to a family who still cares about her despite their differences, so that she doesn’t have to bear this world alone.
